Meeting of Iran, Syria and Turkey ministers of defense and intelligence in Moscow
Last night’s News Review on Press TV (Iran) focused on the meeting in Moscow earlier in the day by defense and intelligence ministers of Syria, Turkey and Iran to address common security concerns. The Russian hosts were led by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
This important event favoring normalization of interstate relations and resolution of the Syrian crisis received very little attention in the wider world. One reason is that the United States has no interest in the survival of the Assad government or in the end of strife in the Middle East region, which it uses to prolong its military interventions in country after country. For their part, the Russians gave almost no news coverage to the meeting since all their attention was directed at the speech being delivered in New York at the United Nations Security Council by their Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and to his meetings with UN Secretary General Antonio Gutterez with respect to the future of the agreement for export of Ukrainian grain.
But in the Middle East, the meeting of these high officials is a natural progression in settlement of regional conflicts that began more than a month ago with the normalization of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia through “honest broker” assistance by Chinese foreign affairs officials. The timing, within weeks of the coming national elections in Turkey suggests the consolidation of a new and constructive policy in Ankara to be implemented by whoever wins the presidency.
All of the parties invited to the talks in Moscow have in common the issue of Kurdish populations living on their territory, and their reaching agreement on security provisions with respect to the Kurds will open the way for withdrawal of Turkish troop from Syria, for a rapprochement between the Kurds and the Assad government, and for expulsion of the American forces from the important oil-producing region of Syria which has been justified by their supposed defense of the Syrian Kurds.
