The Canadian province of Alberta has joined the Australian state of Victoria in reneging on its agreement to host the Commonwealth Games. Once known as the British Empire Games, this event has done its best over the years to advertise the sort of post-colonial virtue the Commonweath is today meant to signal. Righteousness doesn’t run well on autopilot. Some people have said it’s only a matter of time before the Commonwealth itself dissolves given how heavy a role the late Queen played in sustaining it with what was for her a rare passion. Still, the Commonwealth might have waited a decent interval before shutting up shop.
