Jeff, I think the United States would act roughly as Russia has if China supported the anti-US side a coup in Mexico along the route to incorporating China in to an anti-US millitary alliance. I’m not sure what my feelings would be, but I wouldn’t back China’s policy.
Reagan died a long time ago, Tom. The GOP is now the Trumpian party of far-right conspiracy mongers and seditionists, gun-rights and religious extremists, racists and, to the issue at hand, Russia apologists. If you haven't yet publicly renounced them, you have the opportunity here.
Meanwhile, I humbly stand with the brave Ukrainians who have prevailed against Putin’s monstrous invasion and ongoing war crimes—as well as those courageous Russians who daily risk their freedom and even lives speaking out against the invasion and Putin’s denial of free and fair elections. As for my military service, I’m proud of my small part in saving the lives of US Marines and Vietnamese civilians in the DaNang-Quang Nam area during my tour as a US Army intelligence case officer in 1968-69, for which was was awarded a Bronze Star. (Interested parties can read about that in my 2017 Newsweek piece.)
Had you responded to my piece with something other than just a snarky “as usual, you have all wrong,” we might’ve had a useful dialogue. I’m curious as to why so many onetime foreign policy hardliners now favor appeasement with the Kremlin over Ukraine but war with China over Taiwan. Alas….
With hope for a better future, Jeff Stein
Yes, Jeff, I am still a Reagan Republican,and--unlike a few I know--still proud of my military intelligence service in Vietnam. Tom
