U.S. and China in the World

U.S. Foreign Policy: Fit for Purpose? (REBROADCAST)

Ambassador Chas Freeman, Visiting Scholar, Brown University's Watson Inst. for International and Public Affairs.

With China, the U.S. has moved from rivalry — healthy competition — to a very unhealthy competition in which America's basic effort to compete is not to improve itself very much but to cripple the Chinese, according to Ambassador Freeman. And we suffer from persisting in a world-view that is obsolete, he warns. Serious charges, but they are based on a distinguished 50 year diplomatic career.

Given the still increasing tensions in the U.S. - China relationship, in spite of the flow of American officials visiting China, Polaris-Live.com is rebroadcasting this conversation with one of America's most experienced diplomats. It is our hope that Ambassador Freeman's advice will find a yet wider audience and play a part in re-tailoring the stuttering engagement between today's two superpowers.
