[Salon] U.S. vetoes Security Council call for a "humanitarian pause" to deliver lifesaving aid to Gaza

FM: John Whitbeck

Transmitted below is a link to the UN NEWS report on today's U.S. veto of a Brazilian-proposed Security Council resolution providing for a "humanitarian pause" to permit the delivery of lifesaving aid to millions in Gaza.

While, yesterday, the U.S. was able to twist enough arms to prevent the required nine affirmative votes in favor of a Russian-proposed resolution providing for an immediate ceasefire, so that the negative votes of the the United States, France and the United Kingdom on that resolution did not technically constitute "vetoes", 12 member states voted in favor of today's resolution, with Russia and the UK, for different reasons, abstaining.

Were it otherwise, it would be fiercely attacked by the Republicans for being insufficiently pro-Israel.
