Jordan Supports South Africa's ICJ Case against Genocide by Israel; OIC, Arab League Collaborate

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi announced on Jan. 4 his country’s support to South Africa for its case filed Dec. 29 at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel for genocide against the Palestinians. He further stated that Amman authorities will be preparing material to file with the Court, to support South Africa’s case, and will be coordinating with other Islamic and Arab nations on this.

Safadi spoke Thursday to a parliamentary meeting on Jordan’s 2024 budget, and noted that Jordan was one of the first nations to speak out about war crimes committed in Gaza by Israel. He said, as quoted Jan. 5 by The New Arab, “Israel’s blockade on humanitarian aid into Gaza implements the starvation policy that Israel is using against the Palestinians in clear violation of international law, which represents another war crime that Jordan has confronted with all its capabilities.

“There are 43 Arab and Islamic countries that are members of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, and one of the decisions of the joint Arab-Islamic summit [Nov. 11, 2023] was to assign the general secretariats of the Arab League and the OIC to prepare legal files, and we are now working on formulating a joint effort to follow up.”
