Brian, Just read your Hill article. Having been somewhat involved in Israel in the 1999-2015 period and written extensively about Arafat, Barak, etc., I would argue that the Israelis did not give the Arafat a chance.
Rabin was assassinated, and his successors were extreme anti Palestinian. I spent a fair amount of time with Barak. He was not offering Arafat anything substantial. I am afraid I must say that from the beginning of the Zionist project, the objective of the Israelis has been a Jewish
state in all of Palestine. Further oppression of Palestinians by Israelis will not resolve the problem. The real solution would be one state of Jews and Arabs, but the Jews of Israel will not swallow that. The next best is two states,
