Transmitted below is a link to an excellent report on
yesterday's first day of hearings at the International Court of
Justice on the legality of Israel's 56-year-long occupation of
the portion of historical Palestine occupied since 1967.
It includes a three-minute video of a moving portion of the
closing statement by my friend Riyad Mansour, ambassador of the
State of Palestine to the United Nations.

It is overwhelmingly likely that, before the end of this year,
the ICJ will rule both that Israel has committed genocide and
that its occupation is illegal and must end.
Of course, Israel and the United States will dismiss these
rulings with contempt, and American vetoes of any UN Security
Council resolutions demanding sanctions against Israel until it
ends the occupation and withdraws from the territory of the
State of Palestine must be anticipated.
However, law-abiding states could and should then exercise their
sovereign right to impose sanctions unilaterally or
collectively.
Appropriate sanctions to be imposed until the occupation ends
could include:
(1) A total embargo on trade with Israel;
(2) Withdrawing Israeli access to the SWIFT payments system;
(3) Non-acceptance of Israeli passports for international
travel;
(4) Withdrawal of landing rights for Israeli airlines; and
(5) Exclusion of Israeli teams and athletes from international
sports competitions.
