Professor Timothy Garton Ash has just been to Munich to promote war-making in Europe. What’s lacking, he says, is the will to win.
Nothing new there, but it would help if the professor could say exactly what ‘winning’ means. Does it mean removing Russian forces from every place they now occupy? Does it mean conquering Crimea? Does it mean overthrowing Vladimir Putin and his government? Does it mean prevailing in a much bigger war?
In other words, if ‘a negotiated compromise peace deal’ cannot end this war, what can? And, who is willing to die for that?
