Support for NATO is holding steady among Americans, according to new polling from Gallup.
Forty-seven percent of Americans say U.S. commitment to NATO should
stay the same, while 20% say the U.S. should actually “increase its
commitment” to the alliance (this number shrinks to 7% among only
Republicans). Only 12% say the U.S. should withdraw entirely from the
alliance and 16% want the U.S. to decrease its commitment. And despite
Donald Trump’s recent warning he would abandon NATO allies to Russia
if they failed to spend more on defense, the share of Republicans who
want to keep commitments to NATO the same has increased from two years
ago, while the percentage who want to withdraw from the alliance has
decreased. |
