China's reaction to the NATO declaration: You are the real threat

12.07.2024

Beijing made a strong objection to and reacted to NATO on Thursday after NATO accused China of fueling the war by supporting Russia in the Ukrainian crisis in the final declaration of the summit in Washington.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said at a press conference on Thursday that the NATO Washington Summit Statement “exaggerated the tension in the Asia-Pacific region, was full of a Cold War mentality and belligerent rhetoric, and contained prejudiced, defamatory and provocative content against China.”

"NATO's so-called security is ensured at the expense of the security of others, and a large part of the security concern spread by NATO is its own work," the Sözcü said, emphasizing that "the so-called success and power are an important threat to the world" that NATO boasts.

"It is NATO's usual tactic to create imaginary enemies to maintain its existence and increase its power," the spokesperson said, adding that this is exactly the Alliance's insistence on the mispositioning of China as a systemic challenge and the defamation of China's domestic and foreign policies.

China's EU Mission also denied NATO's claims on Thursday, stressing that China's stance on Ukraine was open and honest and that it was known to everyone that China was not the architect of the Ukrainian crisis. “China aims to promote peace talks and seek political solutions, and this position is approved and appreciated by the wider global community,” the statement said.

NATO, which has been seeing China as a "distant threat" for decades, on Wednesday accused Beijing of being a "resolute supporter of Russia's war against Ukraine" and demanded the suspension of the shipment of "weapon components" and other technologies, which are critical for the reconstruction of the Russian army.

The US media also described the statement as 'a great deviation for NATO, which did not officially mention China until 2019'.

In a report published by The Guardian, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said: "I think the message sent by NATO from this summit is very strong and very clear, and we clearly define China's responsibility for making Russia's war possible" Stoltenberg also described the statement as an important message.
