Re: [Salon] Lavrov: Turkey's legitimate security interests in Syria should be secured

Why object to what you cannot currently prevent?  Realism is Lavrov's signature characteristic.

Notable absence in this report is any mention from Lavrov of Israel’s numerous outrageous violations of Syria’s sovereignty…

Lavrov: Turkey's legitimate security interests in Syria should be secured

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Turkey's legitimate security concerns arising from Syria should be protected without harming Syria's territorial integrity. He also drew attention to the illegal activities of the USA in the east of Syria, stating that this situation leads to the support of separatist structures in the region.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Turkey's legitimate security interests should be protected regarding the threats from Syria.

At the press conference held in Moscow today, Lavrov stated that this issue is of critical importance for Turkey's border security.

Lavrov stated that the Russian Embassy in Damascus continues its activities and Moscow maintains its contacts with the new Syrian administration through the diplomatic mission.

"First of all, we discuss practical issues related to the safety of Russian citizens and the safe operation of our embassy," the minister said.

Reiterating that Russia is open to dialogue with all active socio-political forces in Syria, Lavrov stated that the new Syrian administration evaluates relations with Russia as “long-term and strategic”.

In addition, Lavrov expressed that despite the difficulties in the transition process, they are ready to support the unification of all processes in Syria and the organization of the elections in a way that is recognized by everyone.

The Foreign Minister said that their contacts with Syria's neighbors Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Lebanon continue, and these countries are trying to ensure that Syria does not experience the destruction of Libya after the NATO intervention.

Drawing attention to Turkey's legitimate security concerns regarding the terrorist incidents on the Syrian border, Lavrov emphasized that these concerns should be eliminated by protecting the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Syria. "The Turkish leadership supports these principles and we support this," he said.

Referring to the "illegal invasion" of the US in eastern Syria, Lavrov reminded that this region has the richest oil fields and the most fertile agricultural lands in Syria.

Stating that these resources are extracted and exported by the USA and that the income obtained is spent on the support of separatist structures, Lavrov added, "This situation should be taken into account."
