When he wrote the book portrayed here, Jimmy Carter, who received the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in achieving peace between Israel and Egypt, was harshly criticized by the American Jewish establishment. Deborah Lipstadt, the Biden administration’s diplomat in charge of fighting antisemitism, compared Jimmy Carter to David Duke in a Washington Post book review.
It’s hard to believe that such a man of goodwill as Jimmy Carter could be described as “antisemitic” by Israel’s strongest American supporters. I’m sure that Deborah Lipstadt and others who slandered Jimmy Carter, now regret having done so.
Sadly, Israel’s defenders casually use the charge of “antisemitism to attempt to silence criticism of Israel. It is now being used against Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, which have called Israel’s killing of at least 45,000 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women, children and the elderly, an act of “Genocide.”
Jimmy Carter’s ethical values and his commitment to good works present a stark contrast to much of what we observe in our contemporary political life.
