Anyone who is not aware of the Israeli attempt to sink the aptly named USS Liberty in 1967 — and even those who are well acquainted with this brutal and deadly attack — should find it very worthwhile to watch the remarkable interview of a Liberty survivor at the link transmitted below, which, encouragingly, has attracted more than three million views during its first two days online.
Early in the interview, the survivor poses a highly relevant question: How did President Lyndon Johnson know who was attacking the Liberty before the ship’s crew knew?
The answer to that question is provided both later in the interview and in Joan Mellen’s book Blood in the Water, published in 2018.
The lead blurb on that book’s dust jacket was written by Richard Falk, the distinguished former UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in occupied Palestine: “Finally, the definitive reconstruction of the greatest moral and political scandal in American history, which demonstrates beyond reasonable doubt that the US government at its highest level conspired with Israel in 1967 to destroy a surveillance naval vessel, USS Liberty, and murder its own sailors to gain a pretext for launching an aggressive attack on Egypt. With this exposé, based on exhaustive research and extensive interviews, Joan Mellen has done an immense patriotic service. An extraordinary book that should not only be read but acted upon.”
