THE REPUBLICAN PARTY NO LONGER WANTS TO BE THE PARTY OF LAW AND ORDER
Allan Brownfeld, January 21, 2025
The
Republican Party has decided that it no longer wants to be the party of
law and order. Instead, it has embraced Donald Trump’s pardon or
suspension of sentence for more than 1,000 people who were found guilty
of assaulting police officers, several of whom later died. They had
been sentenced by judges appointed by both Democrats and Republicans,
several by Trump himself.
The
violent insurrection led by Trump when he lost a free and fair election
will not be forgotten. Viewing those who assaulted police officers as
heroes, which is what Trump and his folllowers are doing, makes one
thing clear: This is not the Republican Party any of us remember. That
Republican Party is now dead.
And
when will the unions that represent police officers finally speak out
in opposition to releasing those who have assaulted police officers?
In
the minds of Donald Trump and his enthusiasts, those who violently
assaulted police officers are heroes. They have even been called
“hostages,” and been compared to those taken hostage by Hamas.
Hopefully,
our society will come to a wiser understanding of the real uniqueness
of America and its political history—-and the clear division of powers
written into our Constitution. I shudder to think of what the
professors with whom I studied American History and Constitutional law
would think of the current moment. They feared such a moment might
arrive. Now, sadly, it has.
