Gleeful observers around the world are already comparing the Americans’ plans for Panama with Britain’s Suez adventure. They should be careful what they wish for. That’s because a successful mission to ‘retake’ the Canal would certainly cost more than failure. Why not try the obvious alternative? Instead of invading a friendly country with the dubious aim of Indian giving, the US government should overthrow the distasteful regime in Nicaragua and build a bigger canal there. At least before the Chinese finally do it.
