I used to wonder why the U.S. prioritized the 1% over the middle class starting in the 80s. After all, the ultra-wealthy can only buy so many pillows and cars—hardly enough to drive a consumer-driven economy. Then it hit me: the 1% contributes more to political campaigns than the next 30% combined.

Years ago, a professor named Larry Lessig (@lessig) dived deep into political campaigns and estimated that SuperPACs are 60% by the top 1%. I think the number is higher now.
