Hungary to oppose EU military training mission in Ukraine, minister says

Foreign Minister Szijjarto said his country would not agree to any part of the mission as the move crosses a line that would make the conflict more likely to spill over into Europe.

Hungary will not agree to any part of the EU's training mission to send military advisers to Ukraine as it risks escalating the war, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday.

The mission is based on a military assistance initiative launched by EU member states in November 2022 and has so far trained 70,000 Ukrainian military personnel. The soldiers are being trained in Warsaw, in line with Hungary's insistence that the mission can only take place outside Ukraine.

Hungary has stood firm on this provision, with Szijjarto noting that this new move crosses a line that would make the conflict more likely to spill over into Europe.

“We will not send a single dollar or piece of weaponry to Ukraine, or a soldier for that matter, even if he is called an advisor,” Szijjarto said.

Hungary will also oppose any sanctions on Russian energy imports, Szijjarto added in a press conference broadcast on his Facebook page from Luxembourg after a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
