After being named Chancellor of Germany in January 1933, Hitler acted quickly to find excuses to put his troops in the streets. The Reichstag fire February 27, 1933 was the perfect trigger. Hitler said it was a “God given signal” that made it possible for him to enact emergency decrees that curtailed civil liberties and sent troops into the streets of Berlin. Is today’s Los Angeles a modern version of the Reichstag fire? Are the 700 U.S. troops President Trump has sent to Los Angeles against the will of the Governor of California and the Mayor of Los Angeles a taste of the militarism to come a la Hitler? Is the talk of making Greenland, Panama, and Canada part of the U.S. similar to Hitler’s talk of the need for “lebensruim” for Germany and the need to take Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. Indeed is Mar a Lago a modern form of Hitler’s Berghof in the German Alps? Clyde’s Newsletter is a reader-supported publication.
