In the conflict that rises after Israel's attack on Iran, the country that provides the largest and unconditional support to Tel Aviv in Europe is Germany.
While the federal government does not approve of Israel's war against Iran and criticize the killing of Israel's civilian scientists, it objects to Iran's retaliations.
"We confirm Israel's right to exist and defend the safety of its citizens," Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a statement about the attack on Iran on Friday.
Merz also announced that his government is preparing for Iran's "possible attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets". “Tehran must immediately stop the bombing of civilian targets in Israel,” the chancellor said before going to the G7 summit in Canada on Sunday.
The Embassy of Israel in Berlin has been closed indefinitely since Friday. The federal government also improved the security of Jewish institutions.
In his statement on Friday, Merz stated that the security authorities took the necessary measures.
The Chancellor also reiterated Germany's position that Iran should not develop or own nuclear weapons. “This poses a threat to Israel, the Middle East and the entire international community,” Merz claimed.
Arguing that Iran's nuclear program poses an "existential threat to the state of Israel," Merz said, "This is a legitimate right of Israel," he said, "this is a legitimate right of Israel.
Merz also assured that his government would not touch Netanyahu despite the arrest warrant issued at the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Before he became chancellor, Friedrich Merz promised Netanyahu that we would find ways and means to visit Germany without being arrested if he planned and leave again," he said.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Friday that Berlin will "accompany Israel in solidarity", using largely the same statements.
On the other hand, Wadephul announced that Germany, France and the UK are ready to hold urgent talks with Iran about Tehran's nuclear program in order to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
The German minister, who has made contacts in the Middle East and will visit Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Oman and Israel, said it is trying to contribute to the reduction of tension between Israel and Iran, claiming that Tehran had previously missed the opportunity for constructive talks.
Wadephul told German public broadcaster ARD late on Saturday (June 14), "I hope this is still possible. Germany, France and England are ready. We are offering Iran urgent negotiations on the nuclear program, I hope (the proposal) will be accepted. This is also an important prerequisite for the subsidization of this conflict so that Iran does not pose any danger to the region, the state of Israel or Europe," he said.
Wadephul, who was in Oman on Sunday, suggested that the conflict could only end if all parties put pressure on Iran and Israel.
"There is a common expectation that both sides will have to take a serious attempt to stop the spiral of violence in the coming week," the minister said.
Asked if he believes the Iranian government could fall, Wadephul said he thought Israel had no intention of overthrowing the government in Tehran.
Referring to Gaza, Wadephul said that the humanitarian situation in Palestine is "unacceptable" and called for granting Israel unlimited access to aid organizations.
"The hunger, death and suffering of people in Gaza must end," Wadephul said, claiming that Hamas was responsible for the conflict, adding that the organization should release the hostages kidnapped in the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul went to Israel in his first week of office after visits to France, Poland and Ukraine.
The German state's approval of Israel's attacks on Iran and the murders of Iranian civilians seems to be linked to the “state mind” (Staatsräson) formulated under Angela Merkel. This is based on the idea that the existence and security of Israel will also ensure the existence and security of the German state.
Previous "Green" Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also gave full support to Israel's indiscriminate occupation in Gaza.
In his speech at the Federal Parliament session on October 10, 2024, Baerbock said, “Legitimate defense not only attacks terrorists, but also means destroying them. When Hamas terrorists hide behind people, schools... civilian places lose protection status because they are abused by terrorists," he said.
Baerbock also said that he made it clear to the UN that "civilian areas may lose protection status because they are abused by terrorists".
Israel bought $91.5 billion worth of goods worldwide in 2024. Israel's largest exporters were China with 19 billion dollars, the United States with 9.4 billion dollars and Germany with 5.6 billion dollars.
Germany exports vehicles, medicines, machinery and electronic products to Israel. For example, in March 2025, Germany's most exported products to Israel were pharmaceuticals (43.5 million euros), motor vehicles and caravans (43.5 million euros) and railway or tram locomotives and wagons (30.4 million euros).
In a statement earlier this month, Germany announced that it has approved the sale of weapons worth about half a billion euros to Israel since October 2023.
In response to the question asked by the German government Left Party in parliament, he stated that from October 7, 2023 to May 13, 2025, an export license was granted to ship weapons to Israel in the amount of a total of 485.1 million euros (54,3 million dollars).
Approved exports include a wide range of military equipment, including weapons systems, ammunition, radar and communication devices, and armored vehicle parts.
