The Demons of Paris in 1919 Have Risen Again to Destroy Our World
But that world is crumbling now. It is crumbling because ever since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the incorporation of all the nations of Central and Western Europe into NATO, the Atlantic Alliance, the demonic, catastrophic heritage of a previous peace conference in Paris of 1919 has risen again. Once again, the world is careening towards destruction because the West has re-embraced US President Woodrow Wilson’s simplistic and ludicrous fantasy of national self-determination for all the white races and peoples of Europe (but not for anyone else), which were imposed upon the doomed European continent at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.
Instead of the seven days of Yalta, the Paris peace conference lasted five months, more than 20 times as long. Indeed, according to Professor Michael Neiberg, in his 2017 book, The Treaty of Versailles: A Concise History, “Although the senior statesmen stopped working personally on the conference in June 1919, the formal peace process did not really end until July 1923, when the Treaty of Lausanne was signed.”
The leaders of tiny but well-organized new or emerging mini-states across Central Europe carved out mini empires, enslaving their own defenseless neighbors, with Wilson’s stupid, ignorant, self-regarding complacency.
Instead of two dominant world leaders imposing their rough but ready – and enforceable – order on the world, like in Yalta, no less than five major powers – the United States, the British Empire, France, Italy and Japan – endlessly squabbled among themselves in Paris in 1919. An enormous chaotic supporting cast of officially invited delegations and participants from 32 different countries and nationalities fought simultaneously to instantly micromanage and settle forever the infinite disputes and claims of the planet. These ranged from Jews and Arabs in Palestine to the struggle of the Vietnamese people to escape the oppression of France. The 250 million inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent were not allowed to voice any desire to be free of the British Empire. So much for Wilson’s “universal principle” of national self-determination.
Wilson’s innocent – but far from noble – childish vision was imposed and then hijacked by the half a dozen unscrupulous leaders of tiny but well-organized new or emerging mini-states across Central Europe to try and carve out mini empires, enslaving their own defenseless neighbors, with Wilson’s stupid, ignorant, self-regarding complacency. Thus, “noble little Poland” became a racist military dictatorship at once and with Western, primarily French, military help proceeded to enslave neighboring German, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Slovak and even Russian territories. The tiny Polish democracy Wilson proclaimed and expected instead became instantly the conqueror by brutal force of nine times its originally defined area. It quickly imposed racist, apartheid persecution on its large Jewish minority that had never experienced this in the tolerant German and Austro-Hungarian Empires of the Hohenzollerns and the Habsburgs for at least 150 years before.
Indeed, the immediate Polish persecution of their previous prosperous and peaceful German neighbors was so savage that the German majority in the new Poland appealed in vain to the wonderful new League of Nations – another ludicrous, pathetic, worthless Woodrow Wilson’s “brilliant” idea – to be rescued from it.
To the south of Poland, Tomas Masaryk, a particular genius at manipulating the ignorant and crassly stupid Woodrow Wilson, won the Western powers’ approval for enslaving the Slovak people by cutting them off from their previously far more tolerant and humane Hungarian aristocratic overlords of the previous millennium. It was no wonder that the Slovaks took advantage of the rise of Adolf Hitler to break free of their enslavement by the Prague Czechs immediately.
World War I had broken out in the Balkans in the summer of 1914, but the Versailles Settlement of 1919 in the Balkans left things far worse.
British Prime Minister David Lloyd George and French Premier Georges Clemenceau also played their favorite fantasy role of being indulgent ancient oriental despots by “awarding” Romania with the rich lands of Transylvania, subjugating its ancient Hungarian and German peoples to yet another regime of extortion, oppression, poverty and contempt.
World War I had broken out in the Balkans in the summer of 1914, but the Versailles Settlement of 1919 in the Balkans – a particular favorite area for Churchill to display his ignorant, bungling, ham handed “expertise” – left things far worse. Bulgaria was reduced to impoverishment. In Romania, one of the most corrupt regimes in European history, indulged in every level of sexual excess, human trafficking and depravity. The persecution of Hungarians, Germans and Jews there escalated to new levels of ferocity and sadism. Churchill hailed this as a triumph of “statesmanship.” Like Poland, Romania became an ugly, racist, tyrannical proto-fascist state before Hitler ever emerged.
All the nations of the Western Balkans, in shameless defiance of Wilson’s sacred principle of “national self-determination,” were bundled together, with Muslim Bosnians and Catholic Slovenes and Croats alike herded under the iron and partisan rule of their new Serbian overlords. It is likely Wilson did not even know they were separate races, cultures and religions either. The result was 20 years of bitter, seething unrest that led to appalling ethnic massacres, especially against the Serbs and the Jews, when the Nazis invaded in May 1941.
The result was all too predictable. Churchill had criminally underestimated the Turkish people only four years before, in 1915, in his ludicrous and failed Gallipoli campaign to conquer Constantinople. This time, the consequences of his reckless, ignorant adventurism and repeated incompetence were even worse. The Turks rallied in a national uprising against the small and incompetent Greek army and destroyed them. They also annihilated the ancient Greek communities of Western Asia Minor who had lived in peace with their Moslem neighbors previously for hundreds of years. Hundreds of thousands of Greeks were massacred or fled to the sea to be rescued as destitute refugees by the British and French navies.
Thus, the Paris Peace Conference and the Treaty of Versailles sowed the dragon’s teeth of endless new ferocious ethnic hatreds and wars across Eastern Europe for the next 20 years. These conflicts were not caused by the rise of Nazism. On the contrary, Nazism and its junior devil’s partner fascism arose from the poisoned soil that the “peacemakers” of Versailles had sown. The catastrophic coming consequences of the Versailles master-bunglers was clearly recognized and warned against at the very time it was being perpetrated by such eminent figures as British veteran diplomat Sir Harold Nicolson, British economist John Maynard Keynes, participating US diplomat William Bullitt, later a senior diplomat and advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt and future US President Herbert Hoover, who organized efforts to feed hundreds of millions of people impoverished and made helpless refugees by the borders Wilson and his colleagues drew.
Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, was appalled too. Fifteen years later he and Bullitt, a patient and close friend, cooperated on a book psychoanalyzing Wilson. They diagnosed him as clinically insane. To this day, it is impossible to get an unexpurgated complete copy of that work in the United States. Wilson remains revered as a liberal-internationalist demigod.
We have now seen all those hideous primeval dragons from the Dark Ages rise again in the 36 years since the Soviet Union withdrew its oppressive but stabilizing hand from all of Eastern Europe in 1989.
Liberal imperialist historians in Britain and America are now trying to claim the 1919 Versailles Peace Conference was a huge success. In fact, it was the catastrophe that led directly to Adolf Hitler, Nazism and World War II with all its genocides.
In 2001, Canadian historian Margaret MacMillan wrote an enormous book, Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World. MacMillan today is Warden of St. Anthony’s College at the University of Oxford in Britain, making her one of the most influential historians in the English-speaking world. She also just happens to be the granddaughter of infamous (and notoriously corrupt) British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, second only to Woodrow Wilson in bearing responsibility for the catastrophic settlements reached in Paris that fateful year.
Now history is repeating itself. The dominance of the small Central European nations in NATO has systematically unraveled the peaceful and stable European settlement that was the greatest achievement of Yalta in February 1945. Now all the monsters have again been unleashed in their full, destructive force by the Paris Conference failed settlements.
During and following the collapse of communism in 1989, and through the following decade, I repeatedly travelled extensively throughout Central and Eastern Europe as a senior foreign correspondent for The Washington Times. Wherever I went I was struck by how the terrible ethnic conflicts that followed World War I had miraculously sprung back to life across half of the European continent. I received three Pulitzer Prize nominations for that work. Indeed, in a series of articles in The Washington Times in early 1990, complete with detailed maps, I was able to successfully predict the entire sequence of civil wars that tore apart the former Yugoslavia. I also predicted that Slovakia would rapidly secede from the always empty fiction of a Czech-run “Czechoslovak” state to finally achieve freedom, prosperity and genuine self-determination for themselves. Since then, the Slovak people, by nature brave soldiers, industrious, honest, hard-working farmers and merchants, have quietly prospered.
However, the most evil and long-lasting heritage of Versailles exceeded all those crimes against sanity, tradition, justice, tolerance and decency that Woodrow Wilson and his typically American team of arrogant young liberal internationalist free trade, democracy-preaching “idealists” inflicted. For Versailles elevated all the new and old alike miniscule hatreds, prejudices, suspicions and feuds of Central Europe into driving the cockpit of human affairs throughout the world.
Alas, we have now seen all those hideous primeval dragons from the Dark Ages rise again in the 36 years since the Soviet Union withdrew its oppressive but stabilizing hand from all of Eastern Europe in 1989. For in the 20 years that followed, all of those tiny postage stamp nations down to microscopic Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were generously and idiotically welcomed into the umbrella of NATO and then put under the military protection of the United States. This process still continues to a demented degree that even the comic geniuses of Monty Python in Britain could not have conceived of 55 years ago.
Therefore, now we have the specter of successive United States Assistant Secretaries of State for European and Eurasian Affairs solemnly debating the maintenance of US standards of democracy, micro-regulation of environmental regulations and much else in such mighty powers as North Macedonia, Bosnia and Slovenia. At the same time, the voices of Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Britain have been outnumbered and outshouted in the councils of NATO by the endless hysterics of the Central European mini-states, Lilliputian midgets in Jonathan Swift’s fable of Gulliver’s Travels, who now imagine themselves to be the towering 20-meter-high giants of Brobdingnag.
Today, as the war in Ukraine continues to rage unabated, we see the continuing fearsome consequences of this resurrection of Woodrow Wilson’s hydra-headed, infernal chaos of feuding, divisive, bitter, racist mini-states across Central Europe. They have been allowed, along with their cynical enablers and true believing ignorant idiots in Britain and the United States, to seize and retain control of NATO and Western policy making towards Russia.
Thus, a third of a billion people across the United States with 40 million more in Canada are held hostage to the rapidly looming threat of thermonuclear war with a prepared and desperate Russia that has been conditioned by repeated rejections, broken treaties and diplomatic pledges to see the relentless eastern expansion of NATO driven by its ever smaller, ever more extreme, ever more mad member states as a threat to its fundamental survival. The diplomatic and strategic machinery for the destruction of our world have all been riveted into place. It will not be long now.
Then the Devil’s Work of Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George and their allies will finally be completed.
