The coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu removed all its bills from the Knesset plenary agenda – except for those related to security – due to disagreements with the ultra-Orthodox parties.
Haredi parties have demanded sweeping exemptions for thousands of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students who received draft orders and are now considered army deserters. They are pressing for retroactive exemptions, but senior Likud lawmaker Yuli Edelstein, chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, has opposed such provisions. One coalition source told Haaretz that the gap between the Haredi demands and Edelstein's proposed framework was "too wide to bridge" and "completely disproportionate."
