Traditionally, popular histories of most of America's major wars have focused on the United States heroically battling “foreign bad guys.” But in this book, I take a closer look at  less-heroic, and therefore scantly examined, domestic factors that drove the country into its major wars. For example, wars seem to occur at convenient times on the election schedule, for territorial aggrandizement, or for the economic gain of certain special interests. This more thorough examination of American conflicts led me to conclude that many of those wars were either less noble, less needed, and less effective (or even counterproductive) in fostering US security or national interests than most standard histories conclude.
