Russian President Vladimir Putin did not agree with US President Donald Trump on a bilateral meeting with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy or a trilateral meeting involving all three leaders during his high-profile summit in Alaska last month, according to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
Ushakov noted that Russia and the US reached “many mutual understandings" during talks in Anchorage, Alaska, as reported by Russia’s Ria Novosti outlet. “The visits by Witkoff laid the groundwork for the conversation between Presidents Putin and Trump in Alaska," he said.
“So far, what is being reported in the press is not exactly what we agreed upon. Right now, they are talking about a trilateral meeting, about a meeting between Putin and Zelensky. But specifically, as far as I know, there was no agreement on this between Putin and Trump," Ushakov said.
He also confirmed that the idea of elevating delegation levels for Russia and Ukraine was raised at the Anchorage summit, but Russia has not received any “specific proposals" to raise negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China, Putin is believed to have discussed his meeting with Trump with several world leaders. He said that “understandings" he reached with Trump opened a way to peace in Ukraine.
“We highly appreciate the efforts and proposals from China and India aimed at facilitating the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis," Putin told the forum. “The understandings reached at the recent Russia–US meeting in Alaska, I hope, also contribute toward this goal."
He said he had detailed to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday the achievements of his talks with Trump and the work “already underway" to resolve the conflict and would provide more detail in two-way meetings with the Chinese leader and others."No Question He's Deserving" Trump's Cabinet On Warpath To Secure Him The Nobel Peace Prize | 4K
After his talks in Anchorage, Putin had also dialled Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convey the outcome of the high-profile summit. They also held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, where they discussed pressing global issues, including the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
“We have continuously been discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The conflict must be ended as soon as possible, and a path to lasting peace must be found quickly," PM Modi said.
