[Salon] ‘It’s about time’

‘It’s about time’

in West Asia…

‘It’s about time. It should have been done a long time ago.’ So said Margaret Thatcher after learning of the Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests in 1998.

She might say the same now on learning of the Pakistan-Saudi defence agreement. It makes good sense.

There should be more to come. There should be reinsurance agreements with China, Russia, India, Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, and the smaller regional states. They needn’t all be mutual defence agreements but they should all have the aim of bringing order.

Left out are the Israelis, the Americans, and the Europeans. Regarding the latter two, once more, it’s about time. Let others be the gendarme of the Middle East. That wouldn’t be such a bad thing. For a while, anyway.

An isolated Israel probably is such a bad thing. But what else can be done?
