Harici.com.tr The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the bill that provides for Russia's recognition as a 'terror-supporting state'. The bill requires Russia to be included in the list if more than 19 thousand Ukrainian children are not returned within 60 days. The Commission also adopted two separate bills, which include the imposition of sanctions on China and the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee adopted the bill that provides for the recognition of Russia as the "state that supports terrorism" at its session on Wednesday, October 22.
Senator Lindsey Graham, the architect of the bill, stated that the purpose of this initiative is to increase pressure on Russia, contribute to peace in Ukraine and ensure that Ukrainian children who are taken from the war zone to Russia return safely to their countries.
Graham stated that if the proposal becomes law, it will have "devastating effects" on the Russian economy, which will be an inevitable result of the policies pursued by President Vladimir Putin.
60 days for the return of more than 19 thousand children
According to the bill, if the law is passed, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be obliged to submit a report to the Senate within 60 days on whether more than 19,000 children, whom he took to safe places from Russian-controlled areas, were returned to Ukraine.
If the children are not returned within this period, the Foreign Minister will have to officially add Russia to the list of "states that support terrorism".
In a previous statement, Senator Graham said that this step would make Moscow “radioactive” at the international level and seriously shake its commercial relations with other countries.
Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan and Libya are among the countries that the USA already recognizes with this status.
Sanction to China and support to Ukraine from Russian assets
In addition, the Foreign Relations Commission approved two more bills for Russia.
The first bill provides for the application of economic sanctions against China's support for Russia's military-industrial complex.
The other bill aims to transfer the Russian assets of 5 billion dollars frozen in the USA to Ukraine. Within the scope of this law, it is planned to direct 250 million dollars to the Kiev administration every 90 days.
All three proposals accepted in the commission are expected to be discussed in the Senate General Assembly soon.
Trump canceled his meeting with Putin
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump announced that he canceled his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
Trump also announced that Russia has decided to sanction two major energy companies Rosneft and Lukoil.
In the statement made by the White House, it was stated that Trump hoped that with this step, Putin would "act sansibly" and stop his attacks on the front line.
However, Trump added that he did not rule out the possibility of reuniting with the Russian leader in the future.
