Zamir: We will continue our operations in Lebanon to prevent threats against Israel

Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said: “We attacked a senior commander in Hezbollah. The goal was to prevent the group from increasing its strength and to stop anyone who tries to threaten Israel.”

Zamir added: “We remain committed to the understandings agreed with Lebanon, but we will not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its forces and rearm.”

On Sunday, Israel announced that it had targeted a Hezbollah commander — its first strike in Beirut in months.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he ordered the strike in Beirut on Sunday, targeting “the chief of staff” of Hezbollah. In a short statement, it said: “Just now, in the heart of Beirut, Israeli army forces struck Hezbollah’s chief of staff, who was leading the organisation’s rearmament and rebuilding.” It added that Netanyahu “gave the order to carry out the attack.”

According to the Israeli i24 channel, the target of the raid was Haytham Ali Tabatabai, widely known as Abu Ali Tabatabai, the second-in-command in Hezbollah.
