CRFB Releases Social Security: Just the Facts

March 9, 2026

Social Security is the bedrock of the U.S. retirement system, providing benefits for 70 million Americans. And yet, with the program projected to be insolvent by 2032, few understand who the program supports and why it is facing insolvency in less than seven years. To answer those questions – and more – the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is excited to release its brand-new educational resource: Social Security: Just the Facts.

This illustrated explainer breaks down in 12 easy-to-understand charts how the Social Security trust funds operate, why they are projected to become insolvent, and what the consequences could be if no policy changes are made.

Social Security: Just the Facts is being released as part of the Committee’s Tell the Truth About Social Security campaign. This initiative seeks to raise public awareness about Social Security’s worsening finances and to encourage lawmakers to put forward their own plan to save the program.
