There is now underway a Gulf War III, which, as names go, is fine enough. But it is a chapter in a longer war. The name for this war is not World War III because that leaves out the first world war from 1756 to 1763, unless one counts the war from 1914 to 1945 as a single war. The proper name for today’s war is the War of American Succession. It began in the middle-1990s, and continues. Talleyrand is free today.
