[Salon] What explains America's wars?

FM: John Whitbeck

It is an objective fact that most of the wars launched by the United States in the 21st century have been launched against countries (Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran ...) which posed no conceivable threat to the United States but which were perceived as enemies by a particular small country in the eastern Mediterranean.

I can see three potential explanations for this phenomenon:

1. It is a pure, albeit extraordinary, coincidence.

2. While the United States, bordered only by two friendly countries and two vast oceans, has no natural enemies, its for-profit Hate, Fear and War Industry has an existential need for enemies, Israel has opportunistically offered its own enemies for adoption and Israel's offers have been enthusiastically welcomed and accepted by the Hate, Fear and War Industry.

3. As a result of venality, cowardice, moral bankruptcy and near-treason, almost the entire American political class, of both parties, has owed their primary allegiance to Israel rather than to their own country, prioritizing the desires of Israeli governments over the interests of the American people (https://www.counterpunch.org/2024/07/25/american-obeisance).

Everyone is free to choose the explanation that they deem most credible and, perhaps, to hope that the current American war will be the last manifestation of this phenomenon.
