The President of the United States promised, over and over again, that his White House ballroom would never cost taxpayers a single dime. “Zero cost to the American Taxpayer,” he posted in November. “I’m paying for it,” he said in September. “Paid for 100 percent by me and some friends of mine,” he said in October. “No charge to the taxpayer whatsoever,” he said in February. Every single one of those statements was a lie. The project started at $200 million. It climbed to $250 million, then $300 million, then $400 million. And now, buried inside a $72 billion reconciliation bill, Republicans have tucked $1 billion for “security upgrades” related to the project, with another $400 million proposed separately. The total potential taxpayer bill: $1.4 billion. And this week, Trump called it “under budget.” But the ballroom was never the point. Trump told us that himself. Aboard Air Force One, he said, “The ballroom essentially becomes a shed for what’s being built under.” Court filings from his own Justice Department describe what is being constructed beneath it: missile-resistant steel columns, drone-proof roofing, blast-proof glass, bomb shelters, an underground hospital, and “Top Secret Military installations.” He is building a fortress designed to sustain occupation, with its own medical care, communications, and military command, completely independent of the city above it. And he is sending us the bill while cutting $6.2 billion from food assistance, canceling all ten Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases just in time for a hantavirus outbreak, and proposing to slash the NIH budget by more than 40%. In 1935, Hitler commissioned a ballroom in the Reich Chancellery garden. Beneath it, they built what became the Vorbunker, later connected to the Führerbunker, where he spent his final 105 days underground. This week, the Financial Times confirmed that Putin has been hiding in an underground bunker in southern Russia, afraid of assassination, using pre-recorded video to maintain the illusion he is governing. They don’t build bunkers when they’re winning. They build them when they know what’s coming. And every dictator who ever dug one ended up in it.
