[Salon] At my grand-daughter's high-school graduation in NYC...

My oldest grand-daughter graduated this week from one of NYC's excellent, academically competitive public high schools. The graduating class got to nominate one of their teachers to make a special address. This teacher performed excellently. At one point s/he gave strong shoutouts to students who'd worked hard on environmental concerns-- and then, those who'd worked hard on Palestinian rights. The latter mention got enthusiastic applause from the 1,200-plus people in the auditorium.

Also interesting to note the ethnic/religious makeup of the students/families. Long lists of Chinese-American names in the mix, and many Muslim names (whether South Asian, West Asian, or Black-American kids.) A small smattering of female students wearing hijab. Not something you'd see in France.

But that applause was really something!
