Trump, Infantino booed during World Cup trophy ceremony
US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino were met with boos from sections of the crowd as they walked onto the field for the FIFA World Cup trophy ceremony at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
The reaction came ahead of the medal presentation following Spain's 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the World Cup final.
Spain secured the FIFA World Cup title after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in the final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal.
The victory marked Spain's first World Cup triumph since 2010 and capped an unbeaten tournament campaign. Argentina, seeking to retain the title, fell short despite creating several opportunities throughout the match.
The jeers subsided as Trump and Infantino presented medals to players and coaching staff before handing the trophy to Spain.
Trump, who arrived at the stadium by helicopter, remained on the podium with the Spanish squad during the celebrations before stepping aside moments before captain Rodri lifted the World Cup trophy.
Trump drew scrutiny during World Cup campaign
Trump's appearance at the final came after one of the tournament's most controversial moments, when he publicly acknowledged contacting Infantino to ask FIFA to review a red card issued to US striker Folarin Balogun during a group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun's one-match suspension was subsequently lifted, allowing him to feature in the United States' Round of 16 match against Belgium, where the team was eliminated following a 4-1 defeat.
Criticism of the Trump administration's immigration and visa policies was also front and center throughout the tournament. Players, referees, journalists, and supporters from several countries reported delays and uncertainty surrounding US visa processing ahead of the competition, prompting concerns over accessibility for international participants.
