Reporters Without Borders (RSF) issued this statement following the court blocking a new rule from the Department of Homeland Security that would have limited the duration of foreign journalists' visas:
“This injunction is an important victory for press freedom. These absurd visa restrictions would create substantial risks for foreign journalists reporting from the United States. The court noted that the government's rationale is 'exceptionally weak' and that it makes no effort to defend the rule on its merits. RSF stands with the NewsGuild-CWA and others challenging restrictions that threaten journalists’ ability to report freely and independently. The United States should facilitate international newsgathering to create a better-informed world, not put arbitrary barriers in the way.”
