The Trump administration reminds us again that they have no intention of finding a diplomatic solution to the disaster they have caused:
Mr. Rubio was also asked why Mr. Trump did not just declare victory and walk away from the war now that the U.S. military had managed to seal off Iranian nuclear sites with rubble by bombing those sites in June 2025.
“Because at the end of the day you have to have not simply the destruction of facilities, you have to have a long-term and enforceable commitment to never pursue a nuclear weapon, ever,” Mr. Rubio said. “As long as they’re governed by the people they have now, that’s an unacceptable risk to the world [bold mine-DL].”
The U.S. and the other major powers had a long-term and enforceable commitment from Iran that it would never pursue nuclear weapons over a decade ago, and this president destroyed that agreement to the cheers of hardliners like Rubio. Iran agreed to the most restrictive and intrusive nonproliferation agreement on record, and it reaffirmed the commitment it had already made under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) that it would not seek to build these weapons. The Iranian government then complied with every commitment it made under the original agreement, and the U.S. reneged on it and waged economic war on them anyway.
Not satisfied with strangling and impoverishing the Iranian people for years, Trump then launched two sneak attacks on Iran while their government was trying to negotiate a new accord to replace the one that the U.S. destroyed. Trump’s illegal attacks on Iran caused plenty of death and destruction, but they failed to force the capitulation that the administration wanted. The administration won’t admit failure, and so the war continues indefinitely. That is what has brought us to the current state of affairs as the president’s criminal war approaches the seven-month mark.
